Janna Alampi is the Principal Architect and Owner of EPICx Studio, and is recognized as an expert in building enclosure commissioning (BECx), energy codes, sustainable design practices, and code compliance.
With over 15 years of experience in the architectural field, Janna has an extensive portfolio ranging from higher education to private residences, having lived and practiced nationally and internationally in diverse climate zones. Janna is recognized as an expert in building enclosure commissioning (BECx), energy codes, sustainable design practices, and code compliance, including risk reduction and mitigation techniques for hazards such as floods, tornadoes and hurricanes.
A graduate of Iowa State University, Janna pursued licensure and earned her architecture license in Florida. She is certified as a Building Enclosure Commissioning Process Provider (BECxP) and Accredited Commissioning Authority + Building Enclosure (CxA+BE) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Phius Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC), and a Certified Air Barrier Specialist by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA).
Janna is a leader in Iowa for building enclosure commissioning and has been an architect on numerous projects. Her projects have included storm-hardened facilities designed to withstand Category 5 hurricanes in Florida, and the incorporation of Safe Rooms for tornadoes into new and existing structures. She has been an integral team member on several Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified projects, leading the certification process and playing an instrumental role in documenting and achieving credits during the design and construction phases. As a building forensic analyst, she has performed condition assessments and feasibility studies, investigating the failure and weathering of building enclosures and developing repair recommendations.
Many of her current projects include the commissioning and design peer review of building enclosures from the pre-design phase through occupancy, including onsite observation and performance verification during construction. As a Phius Certified CPHC, she puts passive house principles into practice to create safe, resilient, comfortable and – most importantly – energy efficient structures. Janna integrates energy modeling software into her projects and performs hygrothermal analysis and simulations to evaluate energy use, and heat and moisture transport in building materials.
Janna is the Founder and Past Chair of the Building Enclosure Council of Iowa (BEC-Iowa), which was established in 2016. She was elected to the Building Enclosure Council – National (BEC-N) board in 2018, and currently serves as Vice Chair and a regional liaison for BEC Chapters throughout the country. Recognized as a Citizen Architect by AIA Iowa for multiple years, she continues to serve professional organizations and her community through public service. Janna has given numerous presentations on the topic of building enclosures and commissioning, and has been a guest lecturer at the Iowa State University Department of Architecture.
